Android Auto on Your 2019 BMW X5 — What Actually Works

Carlinkit AU Australian Market Guide 4 min read

The 2019 X5 has the screen, the hardware, and the processing power — but BMW's subscription-gated software keeps Android users stuck. Here's the fast way around it.

Why Android Auto isn't showing up

The G05 X5 launched with iDrive 7, and BMW did eventually add Android Auto — but as a paid ConnectedDrive feature. If your factory three-year trial has lapsed, the menu option disappears entirely. If your car left the factory before the software rollout, it may never have appeared at all.

Getting it back through BMW means a dealer visit, a firmware update that can run $150–$300+ in labour, and then an ongoing subscription to keep it active. It's a lot of friction for something that should just be there.

The Carlinkit TBox — a different approach

The Carlinkit MMB Multimedia Android iOS Box takes a different route entirely. Rather than unlocking BMW's built-in Android Auto, it runs a completely independent Android 13 environment on your factory screen — using your existing wireless CarPlay connection as the entry point.

Think of it as a second brain for iDrive. Google Maps, Spotify, YouTube, Google Assistant, the Play Store — all running natively on your 12.3" Live Cockpit display, with no phone needed once you've paired.

Prerequisite

Your 2019 X5 must have factory wireless CarPlay for the TBox to work. If yours only has wired CarPlay, enable wireless CarPlay first (BMW coding or dealer update), then add the TBox.

Once it's in, everything you already have stays intact:

  • iDrive controller and steering wheel buttons work as normal within Android
  • One floating button lets you switch between Android 13 and native iDrive instantly
  • No subscription, no expiry — the cost stops the day the box arrives
  • Unplug it and your car is exactly as it was

Setup in three steps

  • 1
Plug into the CarPlay USB port

Connect the TBox to the CarPlay-enabled USB port in the front console. The device boots automatically when you start the car.

  • 2
    Pair your phone once

Enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your phone and follow the on-screen pairing prompt. After the first time, it connects automatically every drive.

  • 3
    Switch in from iDrive

A floating button on your display lets you jump between the Android environment and your standard iDrive screen at any time.

Common questions

The TBox is an external USB accessory with no permanent modifications — no coding, no wiring changes. Unplug it and the car is unchanged. If you have specific warranty concerns, check with your dealer.
